The Focus of Our Efforts

THE APPALACHIAN OF MAINE

The Beast of the East

As the Appalachian Trail Conservancy puts it, Maine is the A.T.’s most challenging, rugged and remote state, and it has the wildest feel of any area of the Trail. Maine offers some exciting features that are uncommon elsewhere on the A.T., including wildlife like moose and loons and pristine lakes. It’s also famous for hosting the hardest mile of the Trail: Mahoosuc Notch.  Maine’s tallest mountain, Katahdin, is typically the beginning or the satisfying end of a thru-hike. The portion of the A.T. that runs through Maine is approximately 282 miles.

FLORIDA NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL - SOUTHERN REGION

Big Cypress to the Big O

Don't be fooled by Florida's relatively flat terrain. Although there isn't a huge difference in elevation along the trek, Florida hiking offers its own unique challenges. Explore the wet wilderness of sawgrass prairies, hardwood hammocks and dwarf cypress swamps of Southern Florida. Start your journey at the Southern Terminus in Big Cypress National Preserve, and trek through swamps and historic cattle country to the "Big O" of Lake Okeechobee, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States. The exact route of this trek may be altered slightly due to ever-changing trail conditions and closures.
